The Pre-Storm Homes Behind Punta Gorda Asbestos
Punta Gorda still holds a stock of homes built before 1980, from the downtown historic district to early canal-front development. That era used asbestos widely because it was cheap, fire-resistant, and effective, which is exactly why it still turns up in floor tile and mastic, popcorn ceiling texture, pipe and duct insulation, and old roofing and siding.
Intact and undisturbed, those materials are typically low risk. The exposure event is disturbance. A renovation crew pulling up flooring, a rebuild crew demolishing storm-damaged walls, or an owner scraping a ceiling can release fibers that were safely bound a moment earlier.
