The boom-era neighborhoods sit on vented crawl spaces that breathe waterfront humidity, and whatever grows in it can move straight up through century-old floors. Add HVAC systems condensing through ten months of cooling season, VOCs and formaldehyde off-gassing from the city's steady wave of renovations, homes still carrying moisture from recent storm flooding, and coastal pollen and particulate loads, and no single reading can tell you what is going on.
